I don't know how many of you have abandoned your radio codes as suggested by the feds but we have and I don't really like it!
Now there are too many inconsitancies in our communications. To many crews using plain english that I often don't understand. We even have a couple that have been using "Old English" for ye radio speakith!! Kind of funny though.
Anyone else still lucky enough to still use good old fasion 10 codes?
I miss them.

we still have a few we use, but for the most part we use simple english. I did work witha company that worked exclusively with 10 codes and there was so many. you needed a captain cody decoder ring.

Hi Ed! It has been a while since I've been on the site due to this "never-ending" war going on. I just got back from a deployment. Anyway, I utilized the 10 codes when I was a civilian medic and I love them. I'm a firm believer in the motto "KISS" keep it simple stupid, and the 10 codes provided that simplistic nature. About six months before I enlisted in the Air Force, Horry County EMS abolished the 10 codes and transitioned into "plain English" if you will. Good Lord, it was a cluster to say the least.
The military is a little different. Being a flight medic, we have our own language when talking on the radio. It is very strict in the air due to FCC regulations and that all air control towers in your frequency zone can hear you.
Therefore, yes I miss the 10 codes very much. Abolishing the 10 codes is another example of "experts" coming up with a "bright" idea without fully researching all angles. I invite increased knowledge of patient care and advanced interventions in order to treat our patients more efficiently, but some things in EMS should be left alone.
Lastly, as I was writing this, it is astounding that I remember a great deal of the 10 codes. Actually, when I was an EMT-basic years ago, learning all the 10 codes and memorizing them were part of monthly ancillary training and were a requirement to know. I certainly miss the good ole days...

Post edited by: airdoc_8, at: 2007/05/25 08:58

Here in NY we still use them not totally usually each company has there own version based off the city but its mostly the same. i think its a great thing to have, you have a lot of ppl who dont know how to talk on radios and they yell so loud you cant even hear them 10 codes take away that issue somewhat. i also think it helps somewhat for privacy issues since their are scanners everywhere with someone listening somewhere.
thats my 2 scents.
