Now then everyone. How are you all ?
I am a Paramedic in a large town called Scunthorpe which is in England.
I would welcome replies from any other Paramedics from around the world. I am interested in hearing about your skills, jobs, incidents and any funny things that happen in your day to day roles.
I am curious to know if you all have to deal with the same work load and insanity that we in England do.
Its a funny old job dont you know !

Hello kevbutnobacon.

Glad to see you here.

I have talked to some ppl from Europe before and I have notice there are quite a few differences between the US and your location.

1. Quite a popular topic was compensation. From what I have picked up the medics in the UK are paid much better than here in the states. I could be wrong but aren't the medics in your location paid in the area of $100 thousand per year (US dollars)?

2. Another difference was the education requirements to become a medic. We have anywhere from a 3 month accelerated training program to a 2 year degree. I believe the requirements in some other places are higher. Please feel free to add your education requirements in your area.

3. I don't know what the run volumes in your area are so I can't compare. The service that I dispatch for did over 97,000 runs last year, with aprox. 25 - 35 units on duty depending on the time of day.

I can't wait to hear from everyone else about your locations and calls.

Well Thorney my old lad.
Now you mention it, I believe we in Blighty do earn the equivilant to $100k+ per year. Even more with over time, and believe you me there is always loads of that ! If my basic maths serves me well I calculate that I earned nearly $120,000
How much do you earn ?
In the past Ambulance staff were recruited primarily on past experiance in life, ie armed forces etc.
Nowadays and in the future entry is impossible unless you have educational qualifications to a high standard. Such as several A-Levels or a Degree.
In my area with a population of approx 100,000 there are usually 4 crews on at any one time. How many jobs we have a day I dont know of the top of my head.
All I can say Thorney my old mucker is that its always busy

Hello again kevbutnobacon.

It is always busy here as well. Our crews average (guessing here) 8 calls per shift. Not too bad, and the average time on call from start to end would be about 1 hour.

The pay is quite a bit higher there. In my location starting pay for a new medic is about $17.00 per hour or $35,360 per year, and top pay is about $27.00 or $56,160. I do no know what the cost of living is over there though and that may explain some of the difference.
